Hails from Hidalgo in east-central Mexico in a warm, almost sub-tropical region. Found growing in washes, canyons, and rocky terrain in light, medium and heavy shade. Grows as a perennial shrub in frost free regions. The long, narrow fruits are typically bright red at maturity, and about half an inch long.
