Best Price.\u003c\/p\u003e","products":[{"product_id":"la-grange-de-piaugier-cotes-du-rhone-2022","title":"La Grange de Piaugier Cotes du Rhone 2022","description":"\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eDomaine de Piaugier is one of those little but great French wine discoveries: an everyday wine you don’t find every day.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe \u003cem data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eterroir\u003c\/em\u003e of the wine is exceptional, being situated between Gigondas and Sablet at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail. These vines have never seen pesticides or herbicides, having long since learned how to survive in this climate without any additional man-made assistance. The fruit is harvested by hand at the moment it reaches the optimal balance between freshness and ripe concentration. This philosophy of farming is easy to understand – the best wines are made from the best grapes. Treat Mother Nature appropriately-give her space, give her love, give her respect-and she’ll give you bountiful produce in return.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eAs such, “wine making” in this case is almost non-existent – these prime grapes are gently pressed, racked into concrete tanks, and allowed to ferment with natural yeast from the vineyards. When finished fermenting, the wine is racked into old casks and left to settle for a year until bottling. There are no additives, preservatives, or other human meddling; this is just grape juice turned into wine-Nature’s way. And what a wine it is:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThis kind of wine is why the French drink daily: yes, there are aromas of black currants, red cherries, a touch of nutmeg and hints of \u003cem data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eSous Bois\u003c\/em\u003e. It’s primarily Grenache, which delivers all this upfront aromatic pleasure. But there is also more. Just like in Chateauneuf du Pape this wine is a blend, adding in Syrah, Mourvedre, and Cinsault. The result is complexity across the palate – there is a depth of flavor here to explore, making each glass something different, yet lovingly familiar, like a gorgeous sunset. Again, it’s one of those great daily drinking French wine finds: it doesn’t overwhelm or try to impress. Spurrier. Bettane \u0026amp; Desseauve. Andrew Jefford. Collectively, that is not a farrago of meretricious wine-trade gasconade. That is the most distinguished critical consensus I have ever assembled in a single email about a wine that costs less than dinner for two at a decent restaurant.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\"\u003eSo who is this man?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\"\u003eAlain Brumont is the winemaker and owner of Château Bouscassé in Madiran — a wine region in the foothills of the Pyrenees that, three centuries ago, was producing some of France's most celebrated red wines. Madiran's heyday came long before Bordeaux's famous classification of 1855, when these deep, dark, intensely structured wines made from Tannat, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc were drunk at the tables of kings and pilgrims alike on the road to Santiago de Compostela.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\"\u003eThen the Bordelais merchants got involved. Once Madiran began seriously competing with Bordeaux, the supply chain was quietly choked in favor of the more commercially powerful north. A once-noble wine region was effectively silenced — its grapes pulled, its traditions abandoned, its terroirs forgotten.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\"\u003eUntil Alain Brumont came home.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\"\u003eBrumont returned to Madiran in 1979 with fifty years of conviction and not much else, determined to resurrect what the Bordelais had buried. He replanted the old clay-limestone hillsides. He championed Tannat — the thick-skinned, massively structured native grape that most producers had abandoned as uncommerciably austere. He farmed vines that are now a century old, some older still. And he made, vintage after vintage, wines of a depth and intensity that eventually forced the wine world to pay attention.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\"\u003eThe 2018 Château Bouscassé is the accessible entry point into this world — a blend of Tannat, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc from those magnificent clay-limestone hillsides, aged three years in a mix of barrels, drinking beautifully right now and built for decades more.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\"\u003eThe nose opens with dense, dark black fruits — plum, blackcurrant, dried raspberry — laced with smoky licorice, cedar, cloves and a meaty, savory depth that recalls aged Pomerol. The palate is firm and powerful, with Tannat's characteristically mouth-coating tannins, yet they are remarkably well-integrated — concentrated without being \u003cem\u003ebumptious\u003c\/em\u003e, structured without being austere. The finish is long, spiced and magnificent, crying out for duck magret, braised short ribs, something from the grill with char and fat and honest flavor.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\"\u003eI have had examples of Bouscassé at 20 years old that were still in what I'd call vigorous middle age. This 2018 is just getting started.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\"\u003eComparing it in the field of Latour and Petrus, one would expect to surrender at least several hundred dollars. Meaning if Chateau Latour buys some vineyards way on the outskirts of Pauillac near the Haut Medoc, those vineyards are instantly First Growth vineyards. A little quixotic, right?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eMost chateaux know that this situation really won’t stand for the fine connoissuer and his or her palate. To continue the example, if they are drinking Chateau Latour, or Font de Latour, or Pauillac de Latour, they want it to taste like Latour. So most Left Bank chateaux have gone on a program of buying, swapping, or otherwise exchanging vineyards with one another. So that all of Latour's vineyards, no matter which wine they are destined for, taste like Latour and are grown near the famous tower (Latour has no chateau anymore).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eAnd so it is the case with Lynch Bages. Jean Marc Cazes, the owner of Lynch-Bages, is nothing short of a visionary. Not only has he undertaken the revitalization of the hamlet of Bages, as well as opening Bordeaux to wine tourisim and promoting gastronomy, he has completely refurbished Lynch-Bages and has spent the last 20 years on a program of purchasing, renovating, swapping and exchanging vineyards so that the estate's wines can all align. That brings us to this bargain of a beauty in Bordeaux – Lynch-Bages Pauillac.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e“Pauillac” used to be a third wine of Lynch-Bages – fruit from those far-flung areas in Pauillac away from the main chateau. But now, that is certainly not the case – it sits right alongside Echo de Lynch-Bages (the known second wine), if not actually displacing it. All of those far-flung parcels have now been swapped, and this is home-turf vineyards, the building blocks of Lynch-Bages.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWhy not just make more Echo and discontinue this wine? Well, I have a sneaking suspicion it's because of the Bordeaux wine trade. The main wine and the second are sold through the merchant houses of Bordeaux. This wine is represented globally by the Cazes family – eliminating at least two middlemen in the process. For us, this means everything I mentioned before – one of the finest of Pauillac’s properties, in one of the best vintages, at an exceptional drink-now kinda price:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eA pure burst of dark red and blue fruits emerges from the glass, immediately followed by graphite, leather, a touch of mint, mocha and very expressive floral notes. I’m tasting from a Zalto Bordeaux and nothing could be more profound: There is a seamless integration here that yields up exceptional drinking. It’s fresh, lively and open for business right now. I prefer it decanted. argument:\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eJust before this amazing dish, the sommelier served us a Roussette du Bugey, explaining that it's Roussanne.  Two things: First, Pennsylvania wine law requires restaurants to buy from retailers, effectively adding a fourth tier.  That extra tier is the State of Pennsylvania, making a pretty penny.  This means restaurants have to search deep into the sea of wines, for those golden gems that taste not just twice, but four times above their price. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eSecond, Roussette is not Roussanne.  The sommelier misidentified it, and being fresh from an exam, I called her on it.  Roussette is Altesse, Savoie’s finest grape variety, and as the Oxford companion notes, “rich in mystery, exotically perfumed and well worth ageing.”  She, the sommelier, was wrong.  And totally unimpressed with my erudition.  I, on the other hand, fell in love. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eRoussette is beautiful.  In Franck Peillot's version, it’s oh-so-very-pretty, but not affected at all.  It’s just a bit like white Burgundy, having structure and density on the palate, yet also a bit exotic, tasting of red apples, baking spice, herbs, and honeysuckle. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe pairing was extraordinary.  It was the wine of the night.  And when you consider its price tag (and all the other circumstances), that is saying something rather We’re talking about really darn good Sauvignon Blanc – Gerard Boulay’s Sancerre.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEven though Sancerre has been made since the 1400s, unlike Chablis and Burgundy, it doesn’t have the complexity of laws governing its vineyards. In some ways this is good – I believe the wines remain dramatically underpriced, simply because they lack the tag “Grand Cru.” In other ways, this is bad – about 75% of wine under the appellation isn’t grown on Kimmeridgian soils, the same soil type that—in both Sancerre and Chablis—gives the wine minerality, drive and energy. Instead, many are grown on clay or sandy soils. Not all Sancerres are created the same, and it can be a bit of a minefield.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGerard Boulay’s Sancerre is an example of Grand Cru. Gerard traces his history in Sancerre at the small village of Chavignol back to 1380. At the town square, the records division mentions Jean Boulay as an owner of vineyards. The wines of Chavignol Sancerre are produced on “terre blanche” soils, making them some of the most distinctive and soil-inflected Sauvignon Blancs produced in the Loire, with a delineation and minerality often reminiscent of a top Chablis (or white Burgundy). And here, with the 2021 vintage, we are getting one of Boulay’s best.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe wine opens with a stellar bouquet of gooseberry, tangerine, lime peel, great minerality, white flowers and a touch of fresh tarragon in the upper register. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and rock-solid at the core, with outstanding focus and grip, snappy acids and great soil signature on the long, complex and very classy finish. Of course I will be drinking this immediately, but for those of you who stash a few bottles away, you are in for a divine treat – this will age exceptionally well, for more than a decade.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWines like this come at a price, and Boulay is never cheap. But luckily enough, we were still able secure a small allocation at a great price. By and large, CdR offers great quality when compared to the asking price—something I call a high QPR (quality-to-price ratio).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eAnd these wines are so good, let me introduce you to a little twist: Cotes du Rhone Blanc. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThat’s right, a white wine. While 89% of all of the Rhone’s wines are red, a tiny bit – just 4% -- are made into whites. We don’t see ’em much in this country (the French tend to keep CdR blanc to themselves), but these wines are drop-dead gorgeous. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eOur example today is Guillaume Gonnet Cote du Rhone Blanc “Le Reveur.” \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThis incredible white boasts alluring aromas of white currants, peaches, and frangipani blossoms floating in rose water, plus hints of spearmint, toasted nuts and bread. This is a big, generous white wine that drinks with the texture and voluptuousness of a red. That’s thanks to the grape blend, which creates a delectable symphony of flavors.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\" style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eRoussane delivers a full-bodied, scrumptious, incredibly robust set of flavors – quince, pineapple, and Anjou pear – that builds on the palate right on through the finish. Viognier contributes the divine aromatics described above. And Grenache, just as in red Cotes du Rhone, provides power and structural elements that make this beauty a delight to drink now or to cellar for at least five more years. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eBut no matter how delicious this wine is, I recommend it for two other compelling reasons. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eFirst, for me, when the weather changes, my drinking changes. As it gets cooler, out from the cellar come more reds. But when we get one of those gorgeously warm fall days (like last Sunday) I gotta go back to a white. But a big white, one that fits with freshly harvested food – acorn squash roasted with garlic and pancetta; Cornish hen stuffed with apricots and roasted in saffron butter; chanterelle mushrooms fresh from Oregon, roasted with black walnuts on a bed of veal stock-braised farro. Oh!
